HSK 1–3 | 会 VS 要 VS 能 | Stop Confusing 会,要,能

会 (huì), 要 (yào), and 能 (néng) can feel confusing because one English word can overlap with several Chinese meanings. In this video, the key is not to memorize one fixed translation for each word. Instead, ask what the speaker is expressing: a learned skill or prediction, a want/plan/necessity, or whether the current conditions allow something.

By the end of this recap, you should be able to choose the right word from context—and avoid common traps such as 不要 vs 不用 and 会 vs 能.

Recap & Ending

会  huì

In this video, 会 has two main uses: learned skill / ability and prediction.

1. Skill / learned ability

Use 会 when you are talking about something a person has learned how to do. The focus is the skill itself.

我会游泳。

Wǒ huì yóuyǒng.

I know how to swim.

我会开车。

Wǒ huì kāichē.

I know how to drive.

2. Prediction / belief about what will happen

Use 会 when the speaker predicts, expects, or believes that something will happen.

明天会下雨。

Míngtiān huì xiàyǔ.

It will rain tomorrow.

他会来的。

Tā huì lái de.

He will come. / I believe he will come.

他不会忘记的。

Tā bú huì wàngjì de.

He will not forget. / I believe he will not forget.

以后你会明白的。

Yǐhòu nǐ huì míngbái de.

You will understand later.

Key contrast: 会 vs 要

PREDICTION — 会

PLAN — 要

他明天会来。
I think he will probably come tomorrow.

他明天要来。
He is coming tomorrow — that is his plan.

要  yào

要 has several meanings. The correct meaning comes from context—not from one fixed English translation.

1. Want

Use 要 to say that you want an object or thing.

我要一杯咖啡。

Wǒ yào yì bēi kāfēi.

I want a cup of coffee.

我要这个。

Wǒ yào zhège.

I want this one.

2. Intention / plan

Use 要 when you have a plan, intention, or decision to do something.

我明天要去北京。

Wǒ míngtiān yào qù Běijīng.

I am going to Beijing tomorrow. / I plan to go to Beijing tomorrow.

他明天要来。

Tā míngtiān yào lái.

He is coming tomorrow — that is his plan.

3. Need to / must

In context, 要 can express necessity or something that needs to be done.

那你要早点睡。

Nà nǐ yào zǎodiǎn shuì.

Then you need to go to bed earlier.

学中文要多练习。

Xué Zhōngwén yào duō liànxí.

To learn Chinese, you need to practice more.

明天我要上班。

Míngtiān wǒ yào shàngbān.

I have to go to work tomorrow.

出门要带钥匙。

Chūmén yào dài yàoshi.

You need to take your keys when you go out.

4. 要…了 — something is about to happen

Use 要…了 when something is going to happen very soon—almost right now.

要下雨了!

Yào xiàyǔ le!

It is about to rain!

你快点儿,火车要开了!

Nǐ kuài diǎnr, huǒchē yào kāi le!

Hurry up—the train is about to leave!

电影要开始了,你怎么还没来呢?

Diànyǐng yào kāishǐ le, nǐ zěnme hái méi lái ne?

The movie is about to start. Why are you still not here?

已经十点了,我要迟到了!

Yǐjīng shí diǎn le, wǒ yào chídào le!

It is already ten o'clock—I am going to be late!

Mini Trap: 不要 ≠ 不用

不要 + verb

不用 + verb

“Don't do it.”
Often sounds like a request, instruction, or prohibition.

你明天不要来。
Don't come tomorrow.

“You don't need to do it.”
There is no need or obligation.

你明天不用来。
You don't need to come tomorrow.

能  néng

In this video, 能 has one core use: whether the current conditions or situation make something possible.

1. Ability / possibility under current conditions

Use 能 when the question is not “Do you know how?” but “Can you do it in this situation?” The focus is whether the circumstances allow it.

我明天能去。

Wǒ míngtiān néng qù.

I can go tomorrow — the conditions allow it.

我今天不能游泳。

Wǒ jīntiān bù néng yóuyǒng.

I cannot swim today.

我会游泳,但是今天不能游泳。

Wǒ huì yóuyǒng, dànshì jīntiān bù néng yóuyǒng.

I know how to swim, but I cannot swim today.

我会开车,但是我喝酒了,现在不能开车。

Wǒ huì kāichē, dànshì wǒ hē jiǔ le, xiànzài bù néng kāichē.

I know how to drive, but I have been drinking, so I cannot drive now.

我今天不能去开会了。

Wǒ jīntiān bù néng qù kāihuì le.

I cannot go to the meeting today.
